Hi Everyone... this  is what happened this  morning:

We did not have any visiting Rotarians this morning  but Wendy Heck brought two guests. One was Adolfo Jara, our exchange student and the other was Bijan Sayegan
who is Adolfo's host family for this quarter.  And he and his family are taking Adolfo to Hawaii for Spring Break--lucky Adolfo!

Jason opened the meeting with a few announcements:

Craig Leiser  announced that the new Rotary District office is now on the 8th floor of 1700 Highway 36 in Roseville.

Jeanne Matlock gave us an up-date on the Youth Drop-In Center which is at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stillwater.  The Center is in need of male underwear ( large and small sizes), gas and food cards.  Jeanne will bring a basket next week for those who have items to contribute.

Steve Madsen has decided to step back from  organizing and planning our summer picnic and is giving someone else the opportunity  to take this role.  Steve tells us this is a very easy and fun event ...just get a place for the picnic, order food for 60-70 people and voila!  Mission accomplished.

Our  speaker today was our very own Dave Newman who spoke to us  about District 5960 Fast For Hope, Investing For Impact.  Dave explained to us that Fast For Hope was started in the 1970s when Rotary  decided to forgo eating a meal for one day and the money saved would go to Fast For Hope.  This  project depends on donations from Rotarians and not from the Foundation so there is more freedom to spend the collected money. The goal is to end  poverty in the developing world and in our case that place is Nicaragua and more specifically a remote village called El Corozo.  We want to help others, do good and feel good while avoiding being paternalistic to the local people.  We would like to break the pattern of hand-outs and use  local talents for their economic development.  The culture of obedience needs to be broken and community leaders and leadership positions  encouraged.  There are a lot of successes to celebrate in El Corozo like  the creation of Children's Programs, Youth Programs, Women's Groups and Health Care initiatives.   The bad news is that there is  a fair amount of civil unrest in Nicaragua this year and Rotary clubs there have temporarily suspended operations and commercial flights have been reduced.  Consequently short term goals have been set and we have pledged not leave them unless things get really bad.  Rick Heidick who is going to be the Chairman of Fast For Hope next year just returned from a short visit to Nicaragua and was happy to tell us that there is new blood in the leadership group in the community of El Corozo and that they are in the process of creating a community park that reflects the vision of what they want to build. If anyone is interested in going to Nicaragua in future delegations, please email Dave at dave@bancorpgroup.com .

Next time our speaker will be Ki McCue who will doing a presentation of ZVAGO Cooperative Living--a new development in Stillwater.  Janis Donnelly will be the host.

At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out, as always ---to Be The Inspiration!
