Here is what happened this __cold, __icy, __ snowy (pick 2) morning:

We welcomed one visiting Rotarian, Jim Hunt from the White Bear Lake Rotary and Gary May as a guest.

Jason opened the meeting with a few announcements:

Brewers Bazaar is coming up!

Countdown by countingdownto.com

The BBB event committee will be meeting 2/20, likely at Liftbridge Brewing.  The BBB sponsorship committee will be meeting after the regular meeting next week, 2/19.

It looks like Jason , Jeff Nelson and Ken McGinley will all be doing the Winter Plunge on February 16th as they're raised the $1,500 in pledges including another $60 from Nancy Lyner to seal the deal.

Jim Hunt presented Ed Boeve and Gary May with a Rotary Foundation check for $8160 for the Daylight School project in Kenya.  This project will install a security fence for what has become one of the best schools in Kenya.  The fence will help to keep small children in and predators out, and also meets current government requirements.

Jim also shared some slides on another successful project at Rancho Quemado in southern Costa Rica, where a roof was erected over a basketball court to provide a community meeting space with protection from rain.  8 clubs participated in this project, and the resulting space has had steady and enthusiastic use since it was built, including an event for another town that came from 10 miles away.

Jason noted that club members that want to make a first visit to the upcoming April 11-12 conference of clubs can likely be reimbursed by the club - check with Jason for details.

The quad-club cookoff is coming up on April 15.  The Lake Elmo, Stillwater Noon, Woodbury and Stillwater Sunrise clubs will be pitted against each other in an intense culinary competition where second place is the best win.

Our speaker today was John Kaul, hosted by John Lennes (aka "Lennes") who was represented by an able substitute in his absence.  John Kaul is CEO of Capitol Gains--lobbyist, photographer and documentary producer.  He was Chief of Staff for Nick Coleman, among other duties during his 50 years a the legislature.  John felt he served at a special time in our history, where the benefits of our economic productivity gains were being invested in the US: schools, infrastructure and the space program as examples.  The Democrats and Republicans (only declared as such in Minnesota since 1973) were working toward common goals with differing approaches.  John noted that in the 70's, the Xerox machine changed the scene, allowing lawmakers to have a copy and read pending legislation before votes, rather than proceeding only based on recommendations by party leaders.  John decried the Citizens United ruling which opened up "dark" campaign financing, and the White decision, which allowed judges to have party affiliation.  He recommended a couple books to us: Dave Durenberger: When Republicans were Progressives, and Tom Berg: Minnesota's Miracle.  John shared much more with us this morning, and the members that braved the weather and successfully negotiated this morning's terrible roads were lucky to hear him.

At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out, as always ---to Be The Inspiration!
