Here is what happened this morning:

We had no visiting Rotarians but had three  guests.  We welcomed Mike Lyner, husband of Nancy, Jason Luhmann guest of Del Peterson and Sarah Stivland guest of Bill Miller.

Jason began the meeting announcing some dates to keep in mind ---see the calendar below.
Now for the details:

Jason is still waiting for someone to join him in the Winter Plunge!  Are there no brave souls out there who would take this challenge and raise some funds for our Club?

The District Midterms were this past weekend and quite a few members from our club attended.  Some highlights of the meeting included a Retention Initiative Discussion that discovered that many people join Rotary initially for networking and giving to the community but stay because of friendships made and giving to the community.  Newer and younger Rotarians are eager for mentoring programs. Also discussed was morphing around peoples external commitments and clubs to focus on service work Rotary can be involved with.
Additionally it was reported that the Northfield Rotary has created a Rotary Climate Action Team and is looking for other clubs to form teams and join with them in this initiative.  Jason will follow up with more information for those that might be interested in this noble endeavor.
A District 5960 Strategic Plan was presented with Membership, Public Image and Rotary Foundation being the top 3 priorities.  The Public Image Focus District has taken out ad space on MPR starting this month and running through June--streaming on MPR network and also over the air on 91.1 and 99.5.

Margie Horning gave us an update on our on going grant in Ethiopia--- the generator that we financed is still working and providing many women with the means to learn skills and earn money for their families...a very good thing.

Rotarian in the Spotlight:  This is where we find out something about a club member we did not previously know.  Today the spotlight was on Jon Stillman...a man with many talents.  We learned that at one time Jon marched in the Rose Bowl Parade and had his picture taken with president-elect Richard Nixon after the parade.  He also did some white water rafting on the Zambezi River, which is one of the top white water rafting rivers in the world. He did NOT command a 65 helicopter unit that patrolled the Korean/North Korean border... it was the East German/Czechoslovakian border during the height of the Cold War---obviously a trick question!

Our speaker today was Mike Polehna who pitch hit for  Michelle Margo and his topic was the Curling Tournament on Lily Lake this weekend.  It is called the "Frozen Flannel" and sounds like a lot of fun.  It was created as a way to bring people to town during the winter  to celebrate Stillwater and enjoy our shops and dining areas as well as to be out doors and experience the sport of curling.  Other curling clubs in the area have helped with the preparation resulting in the creation of 4 rinks for the tournament and one rink for those who want to learn how to curl.  There will be a warming tent as well as an ice bar with beer from Lift Bridge.  There is no admission fee for spectators and all the revenue from the day will be given to Community Thread...and no worries--the ice is thick enough  and safe.  Here are the details:

Outdoor Curling and Bonspiel at 1208 South Greeley Street from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. this weekend.  Enjoy curling, the ice bar, ice skating and outdoor winter fun.  Check out frozenflannelcurling.eventbrite.com   or www.eventpotential.com   612-250-4701 for more information.

Next week our speaker will be Hope Summers  who will give us an update on The Lakes at Stillwater.   Boll Howell  will host.
At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out, as always ---to Be The Inspiration!
