Here is what happened this  morning:

We did not have any visiting Rotarians this morning  but we did have one guest, Catherine Halley, guest of Wendy Heck.

Jason opened the meeting with a few announcements:

Regarding the Brewers Bazzar--Stuffers are available for club members to leave at local businesses.  Ken McGinley announced that tickets are available online as well as printed tickets.  The printed tickets are primarily for the Rotaracters to distribute at their own events for us, but if you want printed tickets, please see Ken and he will provide you with them.

Wendy Heck introduced us to  Catherine Halley who is a junior at St. Croix  Preparatory School and will be our Out Bound Exchange
student going to Belgium this coming school year.  Catherine is very charming and looks forward to broadening her views of the world beyond Stillwater.

Jason was pleased to present Mel Sullivan with  her Paul Harris plus 7 pin.  Mel is happy to donate to the Foundation and feels it is a way to pay it forward.  Congrats to Mel!

Our  speaker today was Dr. Chuck Bransford who spoke to us about the changes he has seen in the medical profession during his 38 years of practice.   Dr. Bransford began his medical career in Stillwater in 1980 in general internal medicine at the Stillwater Clinic. At that time Stillwater was a Family Practice town .  People could go to their family doctor for everything since there were not very many, if any, specialists.  Doctors had a 24/7 life style meaning that they delivered babies, went to emergency rooms, saw patients on a regular basis, did surgeries and were on call virtually every day of the week.  A good deal for patients, but kind of a rough road for the doctors.  As time passed and we fast forward to the present, the small clinic has become a thing of the past and has been replaced as a Corporate Business namely Health Partners.  The use of electronic medical records has taken the place of doctor/patient conversations and makes doctor visits quite impersonal.  Dr. Bransford told us that outpatient internal  medicine is going away and is being replaced by many referrals.  Some doctors today are becoming Hospitalists who only work in the hospital and can experience  a lifestyle very different from that of the 24/7 family doctors .  Looking ahead to the future, Dr. Bransford was very excited about the miracles in medicine such as the great advances being made in cardiac care, stemming infectious diseases and immunotherapies being used in cancer care.  All terrific advances but the  downside  is the huge cost of those advances .  When asked how that issue  could be addressed, Dr. Bransford suggested a single payer system sponsored by the state such as the ones used by Sweden and Germany to cut costs.  The other suggestion would be to break the large pharmacutical   lobby in Washington, DC.  Dr. Bransford also fielded a few questions regarding euthanasia, hospice and palliative care...quite eye opening.  For example, Canada supports a universal choice to die and the patients don't even have to be terminal...yikes! ( That is an editorial comment.)

Next time our speaker will be our very own Dave Newman who will give us an update on the Annual Fast For Hope and also what is transpiring in Nicaragua.

At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out, as always ---to Be The Inspiration!
