Hi Everyone... this  is what happened this  morning:

We had no visiting Rotarians  but we did have two guests.  Erin Groble was a guest of Craig Leiser and Catherine Halley was a guest of Wendy Heck.

Erin Groble, who is a part of the Rotary Foundation told us how much she likes working for the Foundation and how important Rotary is in the world.
Catherine Halley who is our outbound  student in our Student Exchange Program introduced herself and told us she will be in Belgium for her year abroad starting August 15th .  She is very much looking forward to the experience and thankful to Rotary for the opportunity.

Paula reminded us about the picnic next Tuesday at The Lakes of Stillwater.  Bring a bolo set if you have one.  NO meeting next Tuesday.

July 23--Club Picnic
July 25--Board Meeting at Family Means--7am--all are welcome.

Our speaker this morning was Dennis Meissner who is the retired Director of the Minnesota Historical Society.  His presentation , Stillwater's Pictured Past, consisted of the many photos taken by  John M. Runk, a renowned photographer.    John Runk took literally 1,000s of pictures of Stillwater from the 1890s until   his death in 1964. He also collected photos of Stillwater from other photographers and wound up with lots and lots and lots of pictures of our vanished past.  When he died his estate donated 2,000 to the Minnesota Historical Society.   Dennis then began to relate the history of Stillwater beginning with the lumberjack and logging period way back in the day  as he illustrated it with John Runk's photos.  He showed us pictures of the various mills in Stillwater which eventually  evolved into our  manufacturing heritage.  That period of time produced fine interior woodwork, agricultural equipment, munitions and the Connolly Shoe Company just to mention a few.  Another part of Stillwater's history  revolved around Education.  Dennis showed us a picture of the first school building built in 1846, followed by one of Central School ( now HQ of CUB foods) , Lincoln School, Greeley School, Garfield School and the High School.  At this point it was 8 o'clock and time for the meeting to come to a close.  Dennis agreed to stay  and show the rest of his many interesting slides to those of us who could stay.  I , alas, was not one of those who were able to stay...but everyone certainly enjoyed hearing our history illustrated by such wonderful photos. Big Big Thanks to  John M. Runk for preserving Stillwater's long, rich and wonderful past.

Next week...NO MEETING...Picnic Time!!
